One hour from the heart of Cape Town, you'll find the Golden Valley Casino. It may be one of the smaller casinos in South Africa, but the stunning views of nearby mountains and fynbos mean that it's absolutely worth the trip. It's not often you find a peaceful country retreat that also comes with some hot gambling action thrown into the mix.
Golden Valley Casino prides itself on Boland hospitality, calling itself the friendliest casino in the Western Cape, and they do a fantastic job of being welcoming – you're sure to have a smile on your face from the minute you arrive. But, with just a couple of hundred slot machines and only a few table games – Blackjack, American Roulette and Raise 'Em Poker – there's no getting around the fact that this is a small venue.
However, this actually makes it a little less intimidating to new players who aren't used to big casinos. Golden Valley even provides a low stakes roulette table every morning for players who are still trying to get to grips with the game. For a small venue, the casino offers a surprising number of promotions and events that allow players to win extra prizes, earn more loyalty points and take part in prize draws
As rustic and secluded as the exterior of the casino feels, the interior is pure Vegas glitz – patterned carpets, chandeliers plus plenty of green felt and bright lights. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and it's no wonder that so many visitors have fallen in love with Golden Valley Casino.
If it's drinks, bar food, live entertainment or big screen sports coverage you're after, then you'll want to head to Winners Sports Bar. There's karaoke, live music and other events to check out running regularly.
If you're looking for an a la carte menu or a home style buffet, get yourself to Kuipers Restaurant instead. With South African favourites and a family friendly atmosphere, there's something for everyone here.
It's a good thing that these two restaurants offer plenty of choice, because there aren't a whole lot of other eateries close by. Fortunately, they should have enough variety on the menu to last you and your party for as many meals as you'll need during your stay.
If you're just looking for something to indulge your sweet tooth like chocolate or snacks such as crisps etc., visit The Trading Post to stock up.
Its lodge style accommodation makes heading back to your room after a day at the tables, or a night in the bar, visiting Golden Valley Casino a real treat. Expect great views from most rooms and, of course, the casino is only ever a short walk away.
There may be close to 100 rooms, but the spacious and luxurious surroundings really do give you the feel that you're in your own private Western Cape Winelands ranch.
With a buffet breakfast, outdoor swimming pool and mini day spa offering treatments (at an additional cost), there are plenty of opportunities to unwind and indulge yourself. If you're not sure what to do next, just speak to the 24 hour front desk service – we're sure they will have a few ideas for you.
Golden Valley isn't really the sort of place you come if you're expecting a ton of different pubs and clubs in which to party. The vibe here is a little sleepier and a little more laidback, but you'll start to get that feeling as you make your way out of Cape Town and towards Golden Valley.
That said, Winners Sports Bar hosts events including live music, tribute shows and comedy acts to enjoy while you sit back and relax with a drink. You can probably find the folks who've hit the big time sipping champagne until the early hours here.
Obviously the casino is also open 24 hours a day, so it's probably the ideal place to go if you can't sleep and are looking for some fun and excitement.
There's plenty of supervised entertainment for kids to enjoy at Harry's Corner while you gamble or check out other activities. And there really are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy!
For example, you can explore the Worcester wine route and enjoy a glass or two, play a round at the nearby golf club, take a river cruise (or maybe indulge your inner thrill-seeker and go whitewater rafting) or check out the nearby museum and botanical gardens. You'll be surprised at just how much there is to do at what feels like a humble little venue.
Since you're on this website, the casino is probably what you're most interested in, but it's good to know that there are so many other ways to pass some time at Golden Valley.
